Unmasking the shooting

Well, I don’t know about you, guys, but for me shooting is a very interesting sport. It’s because, here in Brazil, civilians are not allowed to walk armed, if you do not have permission and are caught with a weapon you are arrested. So to me, I would never think weapons could be part of a sporting item. But, it is!

So let’s talk about shooting!

Before, it was developed only for military training and hunting. Shooting began to be seen as sport in Europe in the nineteenth century. In the same century, there was the first competition of the modality in Sweden. Shooting step into the Olympics in 1896 and has been at the Pan American Games since the first edition in 1951.

In Great Britain, in 1814, Colonel Peter Hawker published a book containing the first rules for competitions. It was created in the United States, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) around 1871 and nowadays has 154 affiliated countries. Today the headquarters are in Germany. We can say that the most prominent countries in the shooting are: Switzerland, Denmark, France, Norway, The Netherlands and the United States.

It's a nasty curiosity - I've been too nice using "nasty" as an adjective - at the Olympic Games in Paris, France in 1900, live pigeons were used as possible targets in shooting competitions. Kind of crazy, right?

Let's talk a bit of practice now, okay?

There are three categories of shooting, which use different weapons: Pistol, Carbine and Shooting.

And they are divided in some tests:

For pistol, the tests can be: pistol free, sport (only for women), air pistol and quick shot (only for men). On Carabine, the tests can be: three positions (different weapons for men and women), lying (only for men) and air rifle. And Shooting are: skeet, Olympic fossa and fossa stunt. In this category, in all tests, there is a difference in the number of dishes for men and women. The dishes are 11 cm long, made of clay, limestone and tar.

Concentration and accuracy are essential for shooting practice. It is a sport that requires precision and speed at shooting with a gun that can be both fire and compressed air. The practice of sports requires training and it is necessary to use equipment such as protective glasses. Besides that, the shooter must wear a vest to keep his ammunition and a tampon in his ears.

See you in the next post!
